This is a rant inspired by some trends in comics in the past 25 years. This is the trend towards angst, lots of angst, for everyone. I don't mind my heroes to have problems, I don't mind them question their actions every now and then, it's healthy. I don't mind "realism" (and if you think there is any real about this "realism" I have few bridge to sell you). But I would like to point out, "the Goddamn Batman" is "a Goddamn Asshole" and villain like Punisher, and he should be considered a danger to himself and others and locked in a padded cell.

I still love comics, and the asshole is not a bad character. I love Constantine: he is a great character and huge douchebag, but at least no one pretends he is anything else but a self-serving asshole who every now and than stumbles across the Right Thing To Do. I just wish people would stop treating these characters like good people as well as interesting characters.

There is something about American superhero comics that's makes me want to write about theory and ideas about what these characters mean to me. Japanese comics have inspired my fiction, even the most predictable or non-existent plots (I'm looking at you PoT) inspire me to write the characters as my own. American superhero comics inspire me to analyze, to look at these characters as Jung or Bloom might. So that's what I'm doing.

aren't you glad it doesn't say Harry Potter?

The aforementioned meta
Preface:
I was reading all sorts of fun essays on comic books recently and it got me thinking. See all of these essays are about the big and older names: Superman, X-men, Batman, Spiderman, Fantastic 4, Justice League, Wonder Woman ect. So I started thinking about the metaphors and meaning behind some of the newer characters, the characters created in the 90s and 00s.

It's because I want you to like me. That's why I'm in this little dress that cost more then my paycheck even though it's freezing under the air conditioning. That's why my lips are red and my eyes are black and my hair is in perfect ringlets that took hours. I'm trying seduce you, in case it wasn't obvious. I just don't know how. I admit to a touch of vanity that makes me want to be the most beautiful girl in the room. I just never had to work for it before. Most guys trip over themselves staring at me in a t-shirt that's a size too big. You didn't, you don't. I want you to. I want to be the girl you can't take your eyes off of. I want to always be in your thoughts at the edge of vision. I want you to find yourself staring at me all the time even though you don't mean to. I want your eyes to be drawn towards me, because that's what you do to me. I want you. I want Harry met Sally, and Shakespeare in Love, and Never Been Kissed with you. I want the awkward, funny, sweet, scary, passionate moments with you. I want you to fill me, because I've been empty for so long. I'll patch up all the little cracks and holes in my cup if you'll fill it up, because I think you can, but first you have to like me too.

Title: C'e Chi veglia su di te
Rating: Pg
Genre: Gen
Characters: Gokudera
Pairing: none
Disclaimers: I own nothing not even the clothes on my back
Summary: Gokudera used to watch Disney movies.

A/N: Hayato Gokudera is pretty Japanese name for a kid who didn't know he was part Japanese until he was eight, so I've given a Italian name for those first eight years. The title is the Italian translation of the song mentioned in the text. I warn that I don't have a great handle on these characters yet, so forgive me Gokudera is probably too calm and Yamamoto isn't smiley enough.

Coffee is a fickle friend
When the paper's due
and the night is young
Sweet lullabies it whispers
and pulls you to bed

But when you want nothing
but that same sweet slumber
it sends your stomach shaking
and dries your eyes instead

Coffee doesn't care
about chemicals and rules
it's action always different
but it always leaves you dead

1) Friendly Weather

People say out here in sleazy sunny Hollywood we're not real friends. Oh, we're friendly enough, after a couple days out here you won't be able to count high enough to number your new friends. We're open and welcoming, our smiles are permanent cracks on our faces. We just don't stick around long. We love to party with you but when you need us we're gone. New Englanders shake their heads, they don't get it. They say they're real friends up in New England. They might not open their doors so readily but they when they do, the door is open for you. I guess it has to do with the weather. New England house are built for rough winds, deep snows, and heavy rains. The people are too. Here in the great southwest they call us fair weather friends, but you can blame us when we have so much fair weather.

2)Mother

My mother is likely the most interesting person I'll ever know. People search their whole lives for someone like her. Authors spend years trying to create a character that is but a pale shadow to her. My mother doesn't just work a room, she lights it. She knows everyone and they flock to her while I stand by the wall waiting until we can go home.

Naturally, my mother was an actress, I was too young remember and after my brother was born she stopped to raise us. But I hear the stories still. They say she was best Ophelia they had ever seen. They say when she was on stage, no matter what part she played, no matter how big or small, when she stood in the light you couldn't take your eyes off her.

She is, of course, a neuratic mess most of the time, fluciuating between a bit frustrated and a full blown nervous breakdown over the course of a day. And though we don't always have food in the house there is always beer and martini's. Mothering wasn't her calling in life, which is not say she didn't give it her best, but it never seemed to come easy to her. The small things kept getting away, until one day she couldn't take it anymore. That was the year my brother and I learned how to take care of ourselves. That was the year we should have learned to take care of each other.

Color

I was at an interview when I was asked probably the most difficult question for me. How is Tokyo different than LA? I was stumped. It is different, but not in anyway that you can explain in a nice clean package. Tokyo is a big city and in that respect it exactly the same as every big city across the world. The buildings are tall, the transportation is crowded, people are absorbed in their own work and life and rarely notice each other. I usually tell people it's like New York but newer. But that's not quite right. It's just a surface, the Shinjuku layer of Tokyo.

The answer I never give is the one I think would get me strange looks. See the truth is I see cities as colors. LA, the place that has always been my home, is yellow. It's a bright yellow sun and yellow sand and dry yellow grass. It's cloudless sky too bright to be probably called blue. It's bright and wild full of ex-hippies with yellow teeth and plastic yellow peace sign earrings. It's yellow stage lights creating a midday sun inside. It's adobe buildings and their pale pale yellow walls.

Tokyo is two colors. In the daytime it's blue. Blue suits, blue glass windows reflecting a perfect blue sky. It's crisp and clean and safe. It's an ocean of florescent lights tinting everything blue. Tokyo brings out the gray I hadn't known was in my eyes. At night the blue suits go home and the blue lights are turned off. At night Tokyo is red. Red neon lights point the way to everything from noddles to girls. Red lanterns call you into bars and izukaya with red seats and strawberry flavored drinks. Tokyo at night is a sexy red dress and matching red lipstick.
